Hi Jewan,

Good to know you have a boat. You need to know the right spot to fish. As knowing the underwater structure is important as that what attracts fishes. if the fishes do not get an environment to feed on they would not be at that place
Its better you get a GPS.

Depending on what type of boat you have, you can take along people who often go for boat fishing. You could also do with a fish finder. Or else you could accompany some of the guys on their boat trip.

The options are:

1) get one of those GPS and also get one of those GPS coordinates data of coral formations and shipwrecks for the UAE. I recall seeing one being sold in one of the tackle shops....can't remember which one though!

2) make friendships with those local fishermans who are well versed in the fishing spots within the UAE. :P

3) go on one of the well known fishing charters.....armed with a GPS device (actual GPS reciever....or a fone with build in GPS receiver.....e.g Samsung, Nokia, HTC etc....if you need to be a bit more discreet).

4) A fishfinder sonar can be useful PROVIDED you know where to go to....otherwise U will just be wasting your time trying to locate the spot....without any particular coordinates.

5) The best way of knowing the productiveness of any areas without the use of a fishfinder and/or gps ...is to look out for fishtrap pods which had been laid by the local fishermen BUT....... need to be extra careful when fishing near these pods to avoid your lines/hooks/sinkers from being entangled with them. As they have baits in them....they attract fish. These pods are usually marked by floats.

Cheers!

In terms of fish finders gps units etc. there are several brands available here such as lowrance, garmin, hummingbird etc. i would recomend a combined GPS/CHARTPLOTTER/FISHFINDER i dont know what your budget is but i know hummingbird have a unit called matrix series 97 model which retails for about 4500 dirhams, you will need to add a navionics gold chart for the persian gulf region for this for abiut 1200 dirhams, installation is very simple you can do it yourself with basic tools. Failing that take a look at knotika Mall or the shop at the creek yacht club, they are not the cheapest but it will give you an idea of what is available locally

Location: Abu Dhabi
I have a garmin 520s. There is a 420s too which is a bit cheaper but has a 4 inch screen rather than the 5 inch screen.

I paid 2800AED for the unit plus 800 for the bluechart maps. Fishfinders are only as good as the person reading them but the GPS is great. As well as locating all the channels and shallow water that you need to know in Abu Dhabi to avoid beaching I have also used it to scroll around the area looking for different depths and bottom structures. Its better than fishing blind for a newcomer.
