Richie and friends

Got the workshop up and working now, with compartments ready with proper shelving.
Space is alot lesser this time, but it looks ok for now to complete the rest of my rods that are going this season.
Some heavy jig rods and baitcasting and 2 fly rods and some other spiral rods. Most orders are now complete, but new orders are coming in.

Enclose picture of the new workshop.....Anglers' Workshop for rod building and hope to get some flies tied from this bench as well.

Have you got your boat sorted? We need to go to the wreaks, if you have the time?

Cheerio

wow  I'm impressed. Saying someone is interested in building a rod (first time) how would he start? Is it cheaper to make your own, and if not is the product worth the cost?

Kinks

Rod building is fun and enjoying during the summer months where everything is almost flat. The heat, the fish and the anglers are in hidings somewhere. That is the time for hybernating and get some rod building to be done. :D
It does make one happy and to be in contact with something fishy with such weather.

You can start off rod building with a basic kit, that can be available here in Dubai, but I don't think most anglers here are not too acute about what rods they use, hybrid, graphite, reinforced, or kelvar wrapped, and many other features such as SIC Guides with titanium frames or coatings, with the ultimate series of gold cermat.

Although that is only possible with custom made rods while factory rod gives you the typically common and commercially viable choice. But if you belong to the type that goes for technicality and know exactly what you want, you will never fish with a factory rod again, because it does not give you the flexiblity to incorporate in a rod that address your needs to fish, what action you want, fast, ex-fast, stand-up fighters, bait-casting, conventional for the pound class exact, etc. etc. what colour thread, how you want to fashion your handles, what blank you want, etc, etc.

But sometimes, you do get what you want from a factory rod, I consider that lucky, but mostly it is a broom stik or stiff pole , but its availability is never wrong due to commercial reasons and common acceptance of the fishing community to purchase. It will be your choice and if you know what you need to enjoy fishing at its most, custom rod is the choice.

I have often been remarked for bringing rods that too small for boat, but when I hit a fish, I enjoy the most, I got the challenges I need, the run I want from the fish, and the power from the rod when I need the tuck of war. I don't bully the fish with a overkilled stik, but sometimes tiny fellow do hit a size 10/0 hooks. I know this might invite remarks, nonetheless this is one's perference to another, one man's blood is another man poison, that saying goes without doubt. For those who fish with me, will know. I believe that custom rods will soon emerge as the ultimate choice of the critical anglers.

I will be glad to share some basic rod building knowledge with you, it is no secret, the satisfaction derive from getting a fish from your very own custom rod is a rewarding feeling about yourself and a sense of achievement in your very own way of enjoying the sports.

Thanks for that. I know all the basics and my real goal is to make a good spinfishing rod. The reason is, I really cant stand spinning for hours without something comfortable. I can do it and I have before, but its much more tolerable for me to use a comfortable rod, I like a medium slow action with just enough whip to get your lure out there yet still have some flex to make your lure move naturally instead of like a machine. I had this perfect rod over the summer in the US but left it there thinking it wouldn't be a big deal and because it was a one piece it wouldn't be worth the hassle. But I know once I can accomplish that rod, I'll get on a role and keep going.

Also I've seen a few "acrylic" rods atleast thats what it looks like, its a semi-transparent plastic and I like the action you get from them. Are they any good and what are they called?

edit: also when you buy your "raw" rods do the come shaped or do you do that yourself?

Guys,

I still need to sort out a Rod for me :( but I think I want the impossible :) an all round rod ideal for most situations.

Ho hum, bar humbug and all that :(

Kinks if you are looking for a good one piece Spinning Rod, I have 1 x 8ft Spinning Rod from St. Croix. Its very light weight and I used one whilst in America and after two hours constantly casting and retrieving I had no problems :) The only reason I stopped was because I had to go and pick the wife up from the mall :(

If you want to have a look its in the shop in Fujairah. You can also ask Paul Derrick to have a look at his as he bought the 7'6" version of the same rod.
